(5 feb. 1725, West Barnstable, Mass., EE.UU.–23 may. 1783, Andover, Mass.).

Estadista estadounidense partidario de la independencia. Ante el tribunal colonial presentó argumentos contra la imposición del writ of assistance (mandato de asistencia) (1761) por parte de los británicos; se le atribuye haber señalado que "la tributación sin representación es tiranía. Integró la legislatura provincial (1761–69) y, junto con Samuel Adams, fue un opositor destacado de la ley del Timbre. Redactó panfletos políticos en favor de la causa de los colonos, entre ellos The Rights of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved [Los derechos declarados y comprobados de las colonias británicas] (1764). En 1789 recibió un golpe en la cabeza durante una refriega con un funcionario británico y posteriormente se trastornó.
